PHOSPHOLIPID BILAYER
Balloons, tape, ribbon, water, helium.
The University of Chicago, 2006.

This piece consisted of two parts; a free-floating cluster of water- and helium-filled balloons held together only by ribbon, and a massive web of masking tape spanning the entire length of the exhibition space. In order to view the central cluster (and discern whether it was actually floating), the viewer was required to crouch, cross, and tiptoe through the very delicate web of tape, rendering the experience one of active engagement rather than passive spectatorship. The web also served the purpose of ensuring the cluster's central location, as wind currents would have otherwise caused it to travel into a corner. This was the first of many installation-experiments in which viewer is invited to interact with seemingly static material structures.
